After all the clubs external league activities attention now turns to the 5 minute quickplay tournament, in which each player has 5 minutes for all the moves.
The tournament is held once per year. It will take place tomorrow evening on Tuesday March 25th 2014 at 7:30pm at the club. Please could any member wanting to take part be at the club on time in order that the competition can start promptly.
All members present on the day can enter, and depending on how many turn up it will be run either as a Swiss tournament, or an all-play-all tournament. If 15 or more members attend a Swiss Tournament will be held, but if 14 or less attend, the contest will be all-play-all.
The evening is a fun (but competitive) evening of chess in which the usual pressures of a long time control game go out the window and instead the focus is very much on the first gut instinct of playing chess. It depends who plays the best chess on the night and blunders will likely be made by all players during the evening. As everyone starts on 0 anyone on the night can win the tournament.
Last season John Fenby won the tournament, but he will be unable to defend his title this season. He has managed to arrange his final of the plate section of the Robert Ward trophy which is a knockout competition run by the Cannock Chess League against Peter Oliver from Tamworth Chess club on this evening, at our clubhouse, and it is now too late to change the date of the match.
This leaves the door open for everyone else. This is a bit of a shame, but John Fenby sends his apologises to the clubs members. Good luck to everyone in the tournament.
