B team in a "must win" match against Rushall C

Posted on February 10, 2013 at 9:45 PM

The phrase "must win game" has probably become overused in competitive sport, but if the B team are to remain in division 3 this season, they probably do have to win the next match in the Wolverhampton Chess League against Rushall C.  This match is the 5th match out of the 6 matches between the various Brewood and Rushall teams this season, hopefully the B team can repeat their result against Rushall from earlier on in the season.

Rushall are bottom of the division with just 1 point from their 7 matches this season.  A loss against Brewood B on Tuesday night (12th February) will also mathematically relegate them.  But that one point happened to come against Brewood, but not against the B team which in theory would have more evenly matched players, but against the Brewood A team.

The Brewood B team have only had one win this season in the Wolverhampton Chess League division 3, and as mentioned already it was against Rushall.  With the Brewood B team 7th out of 8 in the Wolverhampton Chess League with a record of played 8, won 1, drew 2, lost 5 it would be easy to get downhearted, but 3 of those 5 defeats have been by the margin of 3-2.  Players have been competitive and have won matches, but often not enough of them in the same match!

Team news is uncomfirmed but there will be a team that is capable of winning sent out, whoever is picked.  It won't really matter too much if the team are relegated to division 4, but with a 5 board match in division 3, and only a 4 match board in division 4 it would be nice to remain in the division.  Paul Guest has now become one of the top 25 players in the Wolverhampton Chess League, in 25th place.

We wish all the players well in the match, and the club is open for those not playing for the internal club competitions, or even just for friendlies.
