Wolverhampton A, Mercia A, Rushall A, Lichfield B and Boldmere St. Michael's chess club are all involved alongside the Brewood A team in a six way battle for the two promotion spots out of division 2 of the Wolverhampton Chess League.
Should Brewood gain promotion it would mean that the chess club would be playing in division one of the Wolverhampton Chess League for the first time ever in the club's history.
Roger Grainger commented: "Why not go for the top league? I know it is tough but "fortune favours the brave" as they say."
Team captain John Fenby must have borrowed a "book of cliches" before coming up with this reply: "I think we just take one game at a time."
David Blower commented: "I would like us to aim for division 1, but all the club can do is to pick the best players, and then the results will look after themselves. Well done to everyone involved for a good season so far, but lets go for promotion whilst we have the chance."
The fixtures remaining for the Brewood A team are as follows:
Thursday 3rd March 2016: Walsall Kipping B v Brewood A
Wednesday 16th March 2016: Boldmere St. Michael's v Brewood A
Tuesday 22nd March 2016: Brewood A v Mercia A
It is too early to state how important the Boldmere St. Michael's and Mercia matches will be, but they are two of the other five clubs competing with us for promotion.
The Brewood A team are currently in 4th place, having won three, drawn three and lost one, of the seven matches played so far this season. We have a game in hand over Mercia A and Rushall A, which if we won would put us into joint second place in the league.
The one defeat came away against Wolverhampton A, who are top of the league having being unbeaten so far this season. Highlights for the Brewood A team have included impressive home wins against our other promotion rivals Rushall A and Lichfield B.
Draws against Stourbridge B, Rugeley and St. George's B have meant that the team is already mathematically safe from relegation, with only a promotion to aim for!!
There is also the possibility of a tiebreaking playoff to come but that would be for another article, if it is needed.
