Cannock League - Brewood win away at Lichfield 3-1!

Posted on February 5, 2016 at 10:35 AM

Brewood's Cannock League success continued recently when we played away at Lichfield. There was a lot of pressure on us to win, because as it turned out, we outgraded our opponents by quite a lot!

The match card was as follows:

Paul Wright (130) vs. Arthur Hall (101) - 1-0

Fred Biles (87) vs. Andy Lenz (118) - 1-0

Stephen Bird (99) vs. Roy Smith (72) - 1-0

Brian Jones (60) vs. Peter Crozet (97) - 0-1

Brewood (444) - 3

Lichfield (320) - 1

The individual match reports are as follows:

Board 1 - Paul Wright (130) vs. Arthur Hall (101) - 1-0

Yours truly was playing this game, and since I was on Board 1, I was determined to set the tone for the rest of the team.

Opening - Philidor's Defence (C41)

2. Nf3 d6

3. Bc4 h6

16. Qxf3 Be6

17. Rad1 Bxb3

18. cxb3 Qf6

19. Qxf6 Bxf6

My opponent offered me a draw here. I stopped for a few minutes to consider this carefully!

At this point, no one else had finished. I thought that my position was slightly better, and since I was graded so much higher than my opponent, a draw would not satisfy me or my team. I decided to decline the offer and play on. I'm glad I did!

20. Re2 Rac8

21. Nd5 Bd8

I had won a pawn here, and I was positionally better. I knew now that all I had to do to win was play with good endgame technique.

34. Rc8+ Rxc8

35. Rxc8+ Kf7

36. Rb8 Re6

37. Rb7+ Kg6

38. Kf2 Rd6

39. Ke3 h5

40. Rc7 Rd8

41. Rc6 Rb8

42. e5 Re8

43. e6 Black Resigns

1-0

A fantastic finish, taking advantage of Black's pinned f pawn to create a passed e pawn. Post-game analysis confirmed that White is easily winning in this position.

Board 2 - Fred Biles (87) vs. Andy Lenz (118) - 1-0

A disappointing loss for Andy here, but no individual match report is available at this point.

Board 3 - Stephen Bird (99) vs. Roy Smith (72) - 1-0

Board 4 - Brian Jones (60) vs. Peter Crozet (97) - 0-1

These two wins secured Brewood's victory. Unfortunately, no individual match reports are available for these two games either at this point in time.

Brewood Chess Circle would like to thank Lichfield Chess Club for being such fantastic hosts (such as providing us with free cups of tea!), and for being gracious in defeat.

We hope to continue our success with our next Cannock League Match!
