On Wednesday 10th July 2013, Brewood played their last match of the Wolverhampton Chess Summer League 2013 Division 3 North season, away to Stafford. First of all here is the matchcard:
Board 1: Peter J Windows (122) 1-0 Mike Jarocki 118
Board 2: James Topp (100) 0-1 Peter Crozet (106)
Board 3: D Butler (Ungraded 60*) 0-1 Stephen Micklewright (110)
Board 4: Stuart IE Green (80) ½ - ½ Andrew Davies (103)
* = An estimated starting grade, which is used for grade calculation purposes by the ECF.
Before the match started, Brewood's first 5 matches of the Summer League season had produced 3 wins and 2 losses, meaning the club were 2nd in the league table with 9 points from those 5 games. Bushbury had also played 5 matches, and had won 3, drew 1 and lost 1, meaning they were top with 10 points from their first 5 matches. Bushbury's only loss was against us.
On the same evening Bushbury were meant to have a home match against Cannock, but Canncok defaulted the match to give Bushbury a 4-0 default win, and therefore also the league title. The Brewood team did not know this at the time, and so travelled to Stafford hoping to win to give themselves a chance of the title.
To their credit the team did win, and therefore did everything possible for us to win the league title, but it was not to be. Bushbury had a strong team out in almost every match, with quite often a full team of 4 players for themselves graded over 100.
Brewood finished in a creditable runners up position. The detailed board match reports are not yet available but they will be added in, should they become available. Well done to all our players who played in the Summer League 2013, and as the match reports for the Summer League have been delayed so much it is now almost time for the Summer League in 2014.
We look forward to entering it, with Brewood going to enter two teams, one in division 2, and one in division 3 of the league. Good chess everyone.
