Brewood v Warley Quinborne - the Dudley Chess League Division 3 decider

Posted on March 26, 2013 at 12:25 PM

Brewood Chess Circle will today have the opportunity for the first time in 3 years to win a trophy.  It has already been a very successful season in the Dudley Chess League Division 3 this season.

With the recent increase in membership that we had, this league has been used to give new members and our only junior of the club experience in competitive match situations.  The Dudley Chess League Division 3 is an individual graded restricted league, individual players can not have a grade higher than 115 from the start of the ECF graded season.  However it is not a promotion and relegation league in the way that the Wolverhampton Chess League is, teams can apply to be in different leagues depending on what league they think best suits their players.

This has meant that the matches this season have all been competitive but Brewood are so far unbeaten this season.  The club out of 20 boards this season have won 11 of them, with 7 draws and only 2 losses.  This has led to a match record of 4 wins and 1 draw out of 5 matches.  7 players have featured in the team this season with 5 out of those 7 unbeaten, and 2 of them having a 100% record this season.

After a 3-1 home win against Kynoch and then a useful 2-2 away draw against Walsall Kipping the highlight of the season was then the 4-0 win against Mercia, with Brewood producing a clean sweap of victories of all 4 boards.  No one can quite remember the last time before this that Brewood produced a clean sweap of victories.  Other highlights include a win away against last seasons champions Birmingham Checkmates which produced a very good win for Daniel Binfield finding a rook skewer move which led to his win against a good opponent.

Last time out Brewood produced a narrow away victory at Halesowen in a match which in truth could have gone either way.  David Blower produced a win against Joyce Evans on board 4 with the top 3 boards all been draws. The whole match was decided by one error on one board from Joyce Evans and the scoreline of a 2½-1½ win for Brewood, did show how close the match was.  Nevertheless it sets it up for tonights match.

Team news is confirmed with Stephen Mickelwright on board 1, David Blower on board 2, Mark Binfield on board 3, and Daniel Binfield on board 4.  These 4 players are the most successful for the club this season in the league, with Stephen Mickelwright and David Blower both getting 3 wins and a draw out of 4 matches, and Mark Binfield and Daniel Binfield getting 2 wins out of 2 to have a 100% record for them both.

We are guaranteed at least the runners up spot in the league having been unbeaten in the league all season.  Winning the league would bring a successful conclusion to the first ever season in the Dudley League.  The situation tonight is quite simple.  Brewood are level on points with Walsall Kipping at the top of the league on 9 points but are behind on board count, and we will remain behind on board count if we lose.  Therefore we need to still get a draw from the final match to win the league.  Hopefully we're be able to achieve it.

The club wishes the players well for the match.  For those not playing in the match the club is still open for the internal club competitions and friendlies.
