The Brewood A team won against the Stafford B team away from home, to leave them needing just a draw against the St. George's B team at home, to get promotion in the final match of the season. Getting the draw against St. George's B will of course be easier said than done, as they are top of the league and playing very well this season.
In this match wins on boards 1 and 3 from Derek Laight and John Fenby gave us the win with the other matches all been draws. This continues Derek's 100% record for the club with 9 wins out of 9 this season. It is a very impressive record for Derek. Roger Grainger, Mike Jarocki and Peter Crozet also got draws for Brewood.
Detailed match reports for the boards are unavailable, but here is the matchcard:
Board 1: Kenneth J McNulty (143) 0-1 Derek Laight (160)
Board 2: Denis Nesbitt (119) ½ - ½ Roger Grainger (129)
Board 3: Peter FK Evans (107) 0-1 John Fenby (119)
Board 4: James Topp (103) ½ - ½ Mike Jarocki (119)
Board 5: David J Barker (102) ½ - ½ Peter Crozet (106)
With one match left in the season, Stafford B play against Wolverhampton B away from home. The match is on Thursday 4th April at Wolverhampton Chess Club. Stafford B have to win to have any chance of promotion. If they draw, or lose than Brewood A will go up before the final match of the season.
If Stafford B do win, Brewood A will have to draw against St. George's B to get promotion as a loss for Brewood A would mean Stafford B would get promoted as Brewood A and Stafford B would then be equal on points but Stafford B would have a better board count.
