Brewood B travel to Halesowen needing to win to even have a chance to stay up. Even then they will be dependant on other results, but a draw or a loss for the club will lead to relegation.
This comes after Walsall Kipping manged to win against Halesowen, despite being outgraded on every board. This defeat for Halesowen leaves them mathematically out of the promotion race, in the very next match after they beat our A team, one of the other promotion candidates.
Brewood B will be looking for a repeat of last season, in which the team clinched a 4-1 away win at Wolverhampton B to stay up, in the last match of the season. The Brewood B team eventually finished 6th, one place ahead of Stafford B who finished 7th and were relegated.
Everyone will notice that Stafford B are still in division 3, and indeed Stafford B are doing well this season challenging for promotion to division 2. This is because all promotion and relegation places are all subject to agreement at the AGM. Clearly though this method of staying up shouldn't be relied upon and it won't be. With Walsall Kipping C promoted from division 4, in reality it means that if Walsall Kipping B get relegated, there will only be one promotion and relegation place
This season has seen the B team get 19 board points, compared to 20 last season. Matches have been competitive but there have been 3 3-2 defeats, with different players winning different games in different matches, but not enough of them in the same match to get match wins, and points in the league table. It shows how impressive though it was to stay up last season.
The club will not implode if the B team is relegated to division 4, far from it. But the main difference is that division 4, is 4 boards instead of 5, so it would be nice to win. With division 4 mainly having C teams and even a D team of the clubs in the Wolverhampton League the chances of them changing division 4 to 5 boards would seem remote.
With getting the win in mind the team is Paul Guest, David Buckley, Andrew Davies, Steve Mickelwright, and David Blower. All players have won matches in the Wolverhampton League this season so lets hope we can secure enough of us winning in the same match to win against Halesowen.
A pre match quote from David Blower: "We're be going to Halesowen to win, and then we'll see exactly what Walsall Kipping can do if we manage that against Wolverhampton. We can only control what we do on the board. It will be interesting to see the strategy of agreeing draws with the opponent, if it comes down to it. Halesowen are a tough team to beat, but then so is eveyone there are no easy games in the Wolverhampton Chess League Division 3. Just hope the pre match quote doesn't include too many cliches!"
