June 2014 - Rapid Play Club Championship - the first thoughts
In June 2014 the idea was suggested at a club committee meeting that there should be an ECF graded rapid play club championship. The idea was met with approval by the committee, with the provisions that it would be structured in a way other than players being left to challenge each other as desired, and also that a grading officer would need to grade the tournament.

With no Wolverhampton Chess Summer League this year, there are still plenty of club activities that are going on during the summer as the club celebrates its 35th birthday.

After all the clubs external league activities attention now turns to the 5 minute quickplay tournament, in which each player has 5 minutes for all the moves.
The tournament is held once per year. It will take place tomorrow evening on Tuesday March 25th 2014 at 7:30pm at the club. Please could any member wanting to take part be at the club on time in order that the competition can start promptly.

The internal club championship has continued thoughout the whole time of this season including when the club has had matches against other clubs in the external league competitions. The website hasn't given as much detail about the internal club championship as it perhaps should, as the external league competitions have consumed the website.

A competitive but fun evening of chess ended up with John Fenby winning the 5 minute lightning tournament, with a score of 7 out of 9. Derek Laight and David Blower were close behind with a score of 6 out of 9. Mistakes were made by everyone on the night as the usual time controls of a long match didn't apply.
